About Me

me! much cuter and much younger than I am now!
me! much cuter and much younger than I am now!

Hello!  Welcome to my blog.  My name is Lexy (or almost any other shortening of Alexandra you can think of), and I live in Ontario, Canada.  My family has a long history of blah last names, so much so that facebook has at least 8 other people who share my name, in Canada alone.

The blog started out as an outlet for talking about my dog, my attempts at training him, and the trials and tribulations of never before having owned an animal that has to go outside on a daily basis. In dog ownership, I’ve learned that I am, to some extent, a morning person.  I’m just not that early a morning person.

And, at all times of year, in weather that ranges from beautiful to the kind of weather only postal-workers would go out in, I walk. A lot.  Predawn and pajama-clad, or enjoying the beautiful weather on a lazy Sunday, I see so much more of my neighbourhood than I ever did before getting a dog.

Since I frankly can’t fill up an entire blog with my rants about bad dog-owners and my own inability to make Gwynn not-chase-cats, I try to regularly go out and do something interesting.  Or at least, interesting to me.  There’s a lot of hiking and trying new activities.  Like Axe Throwing and Sheep herding, and Glassblowing.  If I find myself in a post-apocalyptic society, it is very likely that, if I don’t die very quickly, I might just make my way in the wilderness, guarding my sheep with an axe.

I write.   It has almost stopped giving me that “naked in front of your whole elementary school” feeling every time I hit “publish post”.  Though that feeling comes back in spades when someone I know personally and in real-life mentions my blog and reminds me that there are at least 3 of those real-life people in existence who follow it.  I’ve been doing response posts to writing prompts, and absolutely love it.  If you’re interested in reading anything in order (Scattered is a good word to describe myself with) of plotline, head over to the tab marked FICTION – I update it regularly with the latest posts in storylines, whenever a story extends past one prompt-response.  I also participate in Nanowrimo every year, sometimes more successfully than others.

What else do I do?  I bike, cross-country ski, camp, hike, read, obsess over my dehydrator and slow cooker (because any kind of cooking I can walk away from for 8 hours is good cooking!), and try strange and unusual exercise routines.  If you stick around long enough, chances are you’ll hear about some of them.

You can reach me at Lexy3587@gmail.com, or just leave a comment and I’ll get back to you.

  1. Awesome! Loved reading this, and i’m so surprised that no one else has posted a comment or anything!
    Hope there’s more writing soon!
oh, and I also participate in Nanowrimo 😛 Such a fun program right? Add me as a writing buddy (username Doodled93)!
    Ciao!~

  2. Hi, Lexy-pooh! (see my comment to your comment on Power of a Smile)

Glad you are such an outdoor person! I live in sunny, Southern California, and I find I’m indoors a lot. It’s the whole having to work thingy and being on the computer most of the time! Luckily, it’s not cold.

Dogs are great! We would prefer a big dog (wanted a boxer desperately) but we live in a 2 bedroom condo and my kids share a room and we have a balcony vs a yard. So, we understand about space constraints. In addition, we have allergies so we had to get a small (hair) dog a Shih Tzu and he’s been great…but a little goofy. We’ve trained him to NOT be a yip-yap dog. it’s more expensive too, because with hair, you have to get the dog groomed and hair cut! Fur sheds (thus allergies)

I like to bike ride too, and when I’m in an “excise phase” really enjoy taking spinning classes. However, I’m over-weight again, but I’ll be getting back into the swing of things soon!

I subscribed and am looking forward to reading your posts! Come on back and visit me, once we’re commenting regularly, I’ll add you to the community.

    1. Hi Sandi,
New nickname, yay 🙂 And from a fellow Alexandra-abbreviation, or at least an Alexandra-like-name!
I am immensely jealous of you and your warm and sunny location – especially right now, looking out the window at the massive amount of snow that fell yesterday (despite the calendar CLEARLY stating that it is officially spring now). I bet you could bike year-round! If you need a good excuse to go riding, try doing a bike-winery-tour (with my hazy knowledge of Southern California, I’m pretty sure there are wineries in them-thar-hills!).
My dog is pretty big (boxer or lab sized), and a poodle-mix, so he’s low shed, and my sister isn’t allergic to him. I haven’t yet gotten him trimmed – I’m holding out until winter is entirely over. I did, however, give in and trim his eyebrows myself. It looked like I’d done it blind, and he looked surprised for a month after I’d done it.
thanks for the subscription, I’m sure we’ll comment-chat more

    1. Absolutely! I’ll contact you through your email about details and what type of thing you’d like the post to be about. I’ll be away until tuesday, though, so I’m sorry if my response time is slow.

  3. Thanks for stopping by my blog and adding me to your blogroll! My name also elicits a non-descript search on the internet. My name is so generic and there is a Jazz singer with the same name so I am lost in obscurity….and I like it that way. I like your writing style and look forward to following your future posts.

  4. If I were to do a search for my full name on Facebook I’d be the only one.. it’s quite cool actually and knowing my uniqueness stops me from reverting back to my maiden name.

    1. Thanks! A big part of why I like Nanowrimo is that it gives me a goal in writing, even if the reward is a pat-on-the-back type thing.
Your blog is great – so hilarious!

  5. Thanks for liking my blog so that I could find yours! Always love to meet fellow walk-loving Canadians! It can be lonely out there on the dark snowy roads.

    1. Thanks for visiting too! I think you mention somewhere in your blog that you’re in the Halifax area – You probably get alot more snow to trudge through than I do! The last time I was in Moncton in the winter, enough snow fell that the yard’s snow loomed above the cars in the driveway.

  6. I read your “About Me” and just about died laughing….I’m pretty sure that my “About Me” reads almost the exact same as yours, right down to the temporary living with the parents and the dog. Only difference is I’m in Texas! Love it, I’m enjoying your posts!

    1. thanks!
I’m interested in making an About Me comparison, but it looks like wordpress has decided your blog doesn’t exist anymore. I feel like that’s unlikely, because you did only just post on my blog with it. Hopefully I’ll be able to track down your blog and see what shenanigans you’re getting up to in Texas 🙂 I can pretend i’m somewhere warm and dry, like Texas, instead of in the middle of chilly monsoon season in Canada!

  7. Hi Alex, thanks for subscribing! Thought I’d pop over to visit and love your style of writing. I’ll certainly be a regular visitor to your posts. I had to google Nanowrimo as I’d never heard of it. It certainly sounds like a huge challenge – I might be interested this year. Tlhanks for making me aware of it. Morag

    1. Nanowrimo is alot of fun, for sure. They’re also planning on starting a new version of it where you can pick any month to write in – that way, if November is a busy month for you, you can pick a less busy month.

  8. Hi there!
Thanks for visiting me! OMG NanoWrimo! I did it for the first time 2 years ago and it got me my idea for my novel. Then I did it last year in the hopes of finishing my novel, but didn’t make it. Still working on my novel though. Did you see they’re having a Summer Camp coming up?! Maybe the 3rd time will be my charm. My user is viciousblonde if you want a “writing buddy”.

Your dog is beautiful by the way! Looks so snuggly 😀

I look forward to browsing your blog and getting to know you! 🙂

    ~Kristen

    1. I saw that about summer camp… i might have to try that one, because the last nano, I was really REALLY busy, and didn’t even get a half-nanowrimo done by the end of the month.
      Thanks for stopping by!

  9. Hey Lexy! I noticed you are still shy of your fundraising goal for your ride in August. If you want to do a guest post for my blog…maybe something about your ride….I would be happy to post it on my blog. You may get a few more donations to help you reach your goal. Just let me know if you are interested. 🙂 Have a good one! Happy riding!

    1. I would definitley like to do a guest post! Give me a bit of time to acquire a bit more actual-biking in my training, and I’ll write something up that is hopefully at least mildly entertaining 🙂

  10. Love it! Thanks for subscribing to my blog – a fellow Canadian, yay! I’m 26 and like pretty much the same things as you, aside from the food dehydrating 🙂 So fun meeting random “kindred spirits” online. Looking forward to poking around your posts!

    1. Great, looking forward to hearing what you think on my posts 🙂
I’m really enjoying your blog so far – planning on trying some of your intense looking breakfast meals!

  11. For some reason, maybe because I use a old (like me) WebTV, I can only reply to your posts
    here. SORRY!

    Hi Alex,

While I have no clue how I found your blog, I am very glad I did as I enjoy your adventures and things about dogs. While two cats have put me “On Staff” and I do not have room for dogs, I LOVE Dogs and really miss having one.

I was born in the Year of the Dog and yes, I know this sounds weird, I can “Bark and Whine” EXACTY like dogs can! I sound so much like an actual, real dog, neither people or dogs can tell the difference. (At least, I don’t think the dogs know.)

ANYWHO in regards to your comments on “instruction sheets” I submit this:

As I post a lot and write things which I send to some 400 of my personal and internet friends, I am sometimes chastised for my grammatical and/or spelling errors. (Though not by any of the 400 some.)

When this occurs, I inform them that while I make such errors, they are of no actual importance as my communications meet the Primary Purpose of Language.
It being to successfully communicate a desired message from myself to one, or more others.

I also point there are more than a few things which are written in “perfect” english, using “perfect” grammar, and with “perfect” spelling which do NOT successfully communicate their desired message to most, if any who read them. So, in spite of ALL of their “perfectness” they FAIL to meet the Primary Purpose of any Language.

    Some examples are: Instruction Sheets,
Insurance Forms. Tax Codes and various other government communications.

I also inform them the best selling author Leon Uris, (2 of his books are
‘Exodus’ & ‘Topaz’) once said something to the effect of:

“While I can’t conjugate or subjugate, I sure can communicate.”

As I have received unsolicited comments complimenting me on my ability to effectively
communicate, I also tell them they are anal retentive nit pickers who have little else to do than complain about others.

    Please, Take Care!

    Neil

  12. How nice to have a young woman read this old woman’s blog! I’m glad you feel comfortable returning to the nest for a little while, though I understand your desire to hav your own place. Hope that happens soon for you.

  13. I love the idea of walking in all weather, like the postal crew. I’m certain those postal workers who go postal are not the ones out walking. Walking is my favorite exercise.
